Audi Q5
The Audi Q5 is a very popular luxury family SUV. The new 2026 hybrid model ranges in price from around $81,000 to $122,400. Three child seats fit very comfortably across the back seats of the Audi Q5, fitting either three forward facing child seats or a combination of forward and rear facing child seats. Legroom is very good in the Audi Q5, fitting a 184cm driver in front of a rear-facing child seat or 186cm+ driver in front of forward-facing child seats. Suzuki Fronx
This is a surprising little mild hybrid SUV, the Suzuki Fronx. Priced at $28,990 plus on road costs it is a very affordable main or second car for families to do the school run. Three child seats fit well across the back seats of the Suzuki Fronx, fitting three forward facing child seats across or a combination of forward and rear facing child seats. Legroom is again surprisingly good in the Suzuki Fronx, fitting a 180cm driver in front of a rear-facing child seat or 186cm driver in front of forward-facing child seats. Hyundai Tucson
Hyundai's medium size SUV the Hyundai Tucson hybrid is an appealing SUV for families. With the addition of a new hybrid making it more economical to drive too. The Tucson ranges in price from around $45,100 to $61,100. In the rear seats of the Hyundai Tucson three child seats just fit across, it is a bit of a squeeze. With rear-facing child seats installed a 170cm driver can sit in front or with forward-facing child seats installed a 186cm driver can fit in the Tucson. See our full family review here.
Mazda CX-70
The Mazda CX-70 is a mild hybrid, luxury five seat family SUV with an enormous boot space! The Mazda CX-70 ranges in price from around $75,970 to $84,970. In the rear seats of the Mazda CX-70 three child seats fit across very easily and the doors open nice and wide for easy access for kids. Legroom however is not as generous as I'd hoped in an SUV of this length, a 175cm driver can sit in front of rear-facing child seats or a 186cm driver can sit in front or with forward-facing child seats installed in the back of the Mazda CX-70. Mazda CX-60
New to the luxury five-seater line up is the Mazda CX-60. This mild hybrid ranges in prices from $60,000-$85,000. This family SUV has a minimal interior with a rear seat slightly wider than the CX-5. Three child seats fit across the back seats. See our full family review here.
Honda ZR-V
The Honda ZR-V fits three child seats across the rear seats. Legroom is FANTASTIC in the Honda ZR-V and we could easily fit a 186cm driver in front of a rear-facing Infant Capsule. Volvo XC60
The Volvo XC60 is a spacious, five-seater family SUV, it has built-in booster seats in the outer rear seats, with clear markers and directions for the age and size of children that can use them. When it comes to installing child seats three child seats will fit comfortably across in the back of the Volvo XC60. The Volvo XC60 is a fantastic car for tall families, the interior is very spacious, making leg room very generous. With a rear-facing Infant Capsule installed, we could fit a 186cm or taller driver in front of it. See our full family review here.
Nissan Qashqai
The Nissan Qashqai is available in five model grades. The top two the T-iL and N-Design are available as Hybrid (Nissan call their hybrid e-Power) costing $52,365 and $54,365 respectively. The Nissan Qashqai Hybrid is a spacious little SUV, with some nice features for families. The rear doors open to 90 degrees giving really easy access to the back seats for passengers big and small and make it easy for parents to reach in and do up harnesses and seatbelts. I found I could fit three child seats in the back of the 2025 Nissan Qashqai. The e-Power Hybrid model is a lovely quiet drive too. Hybrid too pricey? The petrol Qashqai starts from $32,665. Toyota Kluger Hybrid
The Toyota Kluger Hybrid is a comfortable seven-seater for families. Three child seats fit across the second-row seats, no child seats can be installed in the third-row seats as there are no top tether anchorages. Legroom is good, a 180cm driver can sit in front of a rear-facing child seat in the second-row and I can fit in the third-row behind. The price ranges from $44,000 to $84,000. Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid
The Toyota Corolla Cross is a spacious and practical five-seater car available as a hybrid for families. Three child seats fit across the rear seats but there's only enough legroom for 170cm driver in front of a rear-facing child seat (or taller in front of a forward-facing child seat). Honda CR-V Hybrid
The Honda CR-V Hybrid is available as a five or seven-seater. This is a very spacious and practical car for families. Three child seats fit across the second-row seats very comfortably with very good legroom for tall drivers and passenger in the front. The central top tether anchor point is in the boot ceiling which can affect comfort and visibility of third-row passengers if you are using them on a regular basis. Kia Carnival
The Kia Carnival people mover is a firm family favourite and you can now get the 1.6-litre Petrol Hybrid Model in the GT-Line model. This is a very practical eight-seater car for families big and small. Three child seats fit across the second-row seats and two fit in the third-row seats with good third-row access. Legroom is good in all three rows of seats too. The price ranges from $50,000 to $76,000 for the top-spec GT-Line Hybrid but I wish the less expensive models could also be bought with the hybrid engine. Kia Sorento
The Kia Sorento is available as a hybrid or plug-in hybrid in the top spec GT Line only. This is a seven-seat large SUV which is practical for families big and small. There are ISOFix in the two outer second-row seats and top tether anchorages for all three second-row seats. The third-row seats have both ISOFix and top tether anchors in both seats. Three child seats fit across the second-row seats and two child seats fit in the third-row seats. Legroom is good too for the front passengers, fitting a 180cm driver in front of a rear-facing child seat in the second-row. The Kia Sorento does not have airbags for the third-row seating positions. The price ranges from $50,000 for the front wheel drive petrol base model (all-wheel drive diesels are also available) and the all-wheel drive GT-Line hybrid HEV model is $73,330 (or $84,660 for the GT-Line plug-in-hybrid). Toyota Camry Hybrid Sedan
The Toyota Camry Hybrid Sedan ranges between $39,990 – $53,990. I could fit three child seats comfortably across in the rear seats. Legroom inside was not very good with child seats installed considering it's otherwise spacious for adults in the back. There was only enough space for a 186cm driver to sit in front of a forward-facing child seat or a 163cm driver could sit in front of a rear-facing child seat. Subaru Forester
A capable five-seater SUV, the Subaru Forester is a good choice for tall families. With three Infasecure child seats across the back row a 184cm driver can sit in front of a rear-facing infant capsule or with forward-facing child seats even taller driver and front passenger. Hyundai Santa Fe
The seven-seat Hyundai Santa Fe is a modern looking big SUV with the cheapest hybrid version being the 2WD hybrid base model costing $55,000, in the middle is the Elite Hybrid with all-wheel drive costs $65,000, and the top-spec Calligraphy 6-seat hybrid AWD model costs $75,000. There are a few non-hybrid variants in between to suit various families' needs and budgets. The Hyundai Santa Fe hybrid is very spacious and practical for families with some excellent storage for families. Three child seats fit across the second-row seats and two child seats fit in the third-row seats with good third-row access with child seats in the second-row and good legroom for passengers in all three rows with child seats installed. Kia Sportage
The Kia Sportage is a spacious and practical five-seater SUV for families that is now available as a hybrid. Three child seats fit across the rear seats, or I could comfortably sit between two child seats in the back too. Legroom is good too for the front passengers. Nissan X-Trail
Available as a five or seven-seater, the Nissan X-Trail e-Power is a great hybrid car for families, the rear seats are nice and wide so three child seats fit across comfortably or I could sit between two child seats in the back. The front passengers get a good amount of legroom in front of rear facing child seats. The rear doors of the Nissan X-Trail open very wide so all rear passengers have easy access. GWM Haval H6
The Haval H6 SUV comes as petrol or hybrid and fits three child seats across in the back very comfortably. This medium size SUV is affordable and practical for families. Legroom is great, a 184cm driver can sit in front of a rear facing infant capsule. The price of the Haval H6 ranges from $33,000 to $46,000.
GWM Haval Jolion
Three child seats fit nicely across the rear seats of the Haval Jolion or I could just sit between two child seats in the back. This car is slightly smaller than the Haval H6 but still great for families as it is very spacious inside and there are hybrids available. The price of the Jolion ranges from $25,000 to $37,000. Toyota RAV4
The Toyota RAV4 is Australia's most popular hybrid and ranges in price between $42,600 – $58,000. I could fit three child seats across in the rear seats, I tried both three forward-facing child seats and two forward-facing and one rear-facing and both combinations fitted. Toyota Corolla Hybrid Sedan
The Toyota Corolla Hybrid Sedan ranges between $32,000 – $45,000. I could fit three child seats comfortably across in the rear seats, which wasn't possible in the Corolla hatchback. The Corolla Sedan is also more spacious with child seats installed than the Corolla hatch, especially when it comes to legroom. You have to look into the Tuson Hybrid as it has a Baby drive mode where it smooths out all the drive modes to give a slow reacting drive when carting a sleeping baby around with no jerks or jumps and over active movements in drive mode.
