The 2024 Nissan Qashqai e-powerTi is a five-seat petrol hybrid small SUV. I drove the Qashqai e-Power earlier this year at the Australian launch in Hepburn Springs. Now I get to drive it with my family for a week and see how the 2024 Nissan Qashqai E-Power Ti stacks up as a BabyDrive. We'll put it through our family car testing with child seats and Thule prams.
BabyDrive Verdict
The Nissan Qashqai is available in four petrol variants. The ST costs $34,390, the ST+ costs $38,390 and the ST-L costs $42,690. These are all available in petrol only. I am testing the top-spec Ti model which is available as either petrol costing $47,890 or this petrol-electric hybrid e-power version costing $52,090.
The 2024 Nissan Qashqai e-power Ti looks modern and stylish on the outside.
The styling inside the Qashqai e-power keeps it modern too, with a large central landscape media screen and a minimal, clutter-free dash and central console.
The seating in the front and rear one colour with stitch detail in the central panels.
The back of the Qashqai has good storage.
The rear central seat back has a fold-down armrest with two cup holders that will hold a reusable coffee cup or kid's drink cup.
There are map pockets on the back of both front seats that will hold an iPad and USB and USB-C charging sockets in the back of the central console box.
The rear door bins will hold a refillable water bottle and the door handles are little storage wells for kids trinkets too!
In the front, the storage is practical. There are two cup holders in the central console…
… and a good sized glove box…
… and central console box for storing those everyday things like baby wipes etc. There is a phone charging pad in front of the gear lever and USB, USB-C and 12V sockets.
The front door bins are generous enough to hold a refillable water bottle and an iPad and wallet will fit in them. The handle wells act as storage too.
The boot space is excellent in the Qashqai e-Power and has some really practical features for families. It has a hands-free opening; with just the touch of a button, you can open and close it, leaving your hands free to carry your kids or their things.
The boot floor can be used as a divider to section the boot out and carry the shopping, for example, without it sliding around in the boot.
Or if you leave the boot floor in place, it gives you a secret underfloor storage space! The good news is that unlike some hybrids, boot space is the same in the 2024 Nissan Qashqai e-Power as in the petrol version, the downside being that there is a puncture repair kit instead of a spare tyre.
The boot floor has many configurations. You can drop the floor down, about 10cm, to give a deeper cargo space. You can turn the boot floor over to a flat plastic-covered side, which is excellent when putting in a muddy pram, for example.
The carpeted side is great for emergency nappy changes too, and comfortable for a medium-sized family dog to travel in.
… with the back wheels on, fits in the boot of the 2024 Nissan Qashqai E-Power Ti with three shopping bags.
The Thule Spring, lightweight and one-handed folding stroller…
…fits in the boot of the 2024 Nissan Qashqai E-Power Ti with six shopping bags.
The boot of the 2024 Nissan Qashqai E-Power Ti can also accommodate two 40L and one 90L Thule Chasm duffle bags with the floor flat.
Or using the divider too!
When it comes to installing child seats in the 2024 Nissan Qashqai E-Power Ti…
…there are ISOFix points in both outer second-row seats. They are within plastic guides and they are nice and easy to connect to.
All three second-row seat backs have top tether anchorages, which are clearly labelled, not within plastic guides but easily located through slits in the seat fabric through the boot.
Three child seats fit really comfortably across the second row of the 2024 Nissan Qashqai E-Power Ti which is fabulous news! It is rare for small SUVs to fit three child seats across so this gives families a great option.
Legroom is also pretty good for a small SUV too. With a rear facing child seat installed a 170cm driver can sit in front of it.
With a forward-facing child seat in the back a 186cm driver can sit in front.
Kick room is good under the front seat for outer rear passengers but the rear footwell is not completely flat there is a hump in the central footwell so the central passenger has to straddle it with their legs.
Rear passengers are kept comfortable in the 2024 Nissan Qashqai E-Power Ti with air vents in the back of the central console box and USB and USB-C sockets for charging devices while travelling along.
The media system in the 2024 Nissan Qashqai E-Power Ti has been vastly updated. All but the base model have a 12.3-inch media screen which feels modern and large in an SUV of this size. I found it easy to use and navigate, and having a minimal dash means most of your controls and settings are done within the screen. It has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto so you can access your phone and Apps while driving.
There are easy controls within the drivers display so you can go in and customise the settings of the car to exactly your preference using the steering wheel controls.
The Energy Flow screen allows you to see the relationship between your battery and engine usage while driving.
The reversing cameras in the Nissan Qashai e-Power are really crisp and crystal clear, you have a couple of view options and you can turn the parking sensors off.
The 2024 Nissan Qashqai e-Power is a lovely car to drive. I love how quiet and smooth it feels, just like a fully electric car and it has that great instant acceleration of an EV.
This Qashqai e-Power has an e-pedal as well so you can drive with just the accelerator, if you have ever been on bumper cars or go karts it works like they do you accelerate by pushing down on the pedal and brake by lifting your foot off. The Qashqai e-Power can also do a few kilometres in full EV mode, which I found useful for coming and going from the house late at night or early in the morning so the sound of the car doesn't wake the kids.
The drivers head up display shows your directions which is useful so you don't have to take your eyes off the road to look at the map in the media screen.
Visibility with three child seats is great in the Qashqai, I can still see over the top of them and easily out of the rear side windows.
The turning circle is nice and small, and the steering is nice and light, so it's easy to park and maneuver in tight school and supermarket car parks.
The new 2023 Nissan Qashqai has scored a five-star ANCAP Safety Rating with a massive 93% for child occupant protection making it one of the safest cars for kids you can buy in Australia and it has seven airbags as standard including:
Dual frontal, side chest, side head and a centre airbag that comes between the front passengers heads to prevent them from hitting together in the event of an accident.
There are seperate door and window locks on the driver's door control panel, so you can lock the rear windows and doors to keep little rear passengers safe.

BabyDrive Indepth - Noise
How noisy is the 2024 Nissan Qashqai e-Power, and how easy is the media screen to use?
Being a hybrid electric, the 2024 Nissan Qashqai E-Power Ti is not a noisy vehicle to drive at all.
If you want it to be completely silent and stealth you can turn on full EV mode with a button down in the centre console. This will allow you to come and go from your house in full EV silence. I found this great for early mornings and late at night when the kids are asleep in bed so I don't wake the,

The Qashqai's indicator sound was not too loud, so it did not disturb my kids while sleeping in the back.
The windows and doors in the 2024 Nissan Qashqai E-Power Ti are not too loud or noisy to open and close, and they do not baby-wake!
Becoming a parent I soon realised there are some noises and sounds I feel are unnecessary and I could happily live without if it meant my baby stayed asleep!!
That often the distraction of my screaming, distressed baby is more dangerous when driving than not having a lane departure warning for example.
If it is the lane departure warning beeping that creates distress with my baby then which is safest?
It’s where I think we need to be able to strike a balance and choose when we can mute the warnings or swap them to a vibration in the steering wheel or flashing light perhaps?
A lot of these noises come with the increase in technology and especially linked to safety features and alerts. For me these all have their place.
Another thing I have realised is I spend my time in a lot more places where small children roam, parks, beaches, play gyms, swimming lessons, daycare centre etc. I have become more aware that when I’m reversing or manouvering in the car parks I have to tripple check for small children running around behind me or being in my blind spot when reversing. For this I LOVE reversing cameras, I just don’t like their beeping sounds!!
I have become so much more aware of safety and potential accidents or hazards since having a child and so I love the peace of mind that I get from the cameras and sensors combined with my own vision from windows and mirrors as I don’t trust cameras alone.
BabyDrive Indepth - Car Seats
How many child/baby seats can you fit in the 2024 Nissan Qashqai E-Power Ti?

There is room to insert Bub into their child's seat from outside the car and from inside, and there is room to feed Bub in the back if only one child seat is installed.
Australia being a country of weather extremes- blazing sun and torrential rain, mean you may find it easier to put Bub into their seat from inside the car sometimes. If it’s hot you can get the air-con going, cool the car down and not stand out in the sun while you fasten them in or shelter from the rain and not get soaked yourself whilst you’re doing it. So it is important to test whether Bub can be easily installed from either direction!
BabyDrive Indepth - Drive & Comfort
How comfortable is the 2024 Nissan Qashqai E-Power Ti?
the 2024 Nissan Qashqai E-Power Ti keeps rear passengers comfortable with air vents in the back of the central console box and USB and USB-C sockets for charging devices while travelling.
The climate controls are on the dash situated below the media screen, and they are easy to use and access while driving.
For passengers not in child seats, the rear seats are comfortable. You have good legroom and sickroom under the front seats, the central footwell hump means the centre passenger will have to straddle this with their legs.
The upholstery is grey with embroidered diamond detail in the central panels. Which may be magnets for little kids' spills and crumbs! The front seats are equally as comfortable as the rear seats.
There are four air-conditioning vents across the front of the dashboard, two below the media screen and one at each end of the dashboard.
Visibility is very good in the 2024 Nissan Qashqai e-Power Ti. Even with three child seats installed in the back, I could see well over the top of them and out of the rear side windows.
There are lights and handles above the rear doors so you can see well at night getting kids in and out of the car and you can hang a mobile on the handles to keep little rear facing passengers entertained on long journeys.
the 2024 Nissan Qashqai E-Power Ti is a really enjoyable small hybrid SUV to drive. It's lovely, smooth, and quiet, with instant acceleration and an EV feel. It has a tight turning circle, so school, tight supermarket and shopping centre car parks are no problem.
One thing I have noticed since being a mum is I hate it when I reach a destination or get home from being out and Bub has either done really well in the car or she is screaming her head off and I have done really well to keep it together for the entire journey (usually the latter!!) and it takes 10 minutes to park the car! It can be really stressful. Usually, I dread parking in our tight apartment block carpark, but the 2024 Nissan Qashqai E-Power Ti was easy to reverse park!
BabyDrive Indepth - Safety
How safe is the 2024 Nissan Qashqai E-Power Ti?
The 2024 Nissan Qashqai has been given a five-star ANCAP safety rating, scoring an impressive 93% for child occupancy protection and 91% for adult occupancy protection. Making it one of the safest cars for families you can buy in Australia.
Of the child occupancy testing, ANCAP wrote:
In the frontal offset test, dummy readings indicated GOOD protection for all critical body areas of both child dummies, apart from the neck of the 10 year dummy where protection was rated as ADEQUATE.
In the side impact test, protection of all critical body areas was GOOD for both dummies, and maximum points were scored. The Nissan Qashqai is fitted with lower ISOFix anchorages on the rear outboard seats and top tether anchorages for all rear seating positions.
Installation of typical child restraints available in Australia and New Zealand showed all child restraints assessed could be accommodated in all rear seating positions.
Seven airbags are standard:
Dual frontal, side chest-protecting and side head-protecting (curtain) airbags are standard. A centre airbag which provides added protection to front seat occupants in side impact crashes is also standard.
Some of these safety features are also features that drive me crazy as a mum! Like the lane departure and forward collision alert or the parking sensor beeping sound. I want all the safety technology AND to be able to mute the sound when Bub’s asleep!
