It's time for testing the 2026 Ram 1500 Rebel. This is the off-road-focused variant of Australia's top-selling full-size American ute, and I put it through our BabyDrive child seat and cabin testing while at Lang Lang in Victoria with CarExpert testing 19 of Australia's most popular dual-cab utes. The big news? You can fit three child seats across the back, with ISOFIX and top-tether anchorages for all three rear positions. That's something almost no other ute on the Australian market can match. I didn't have my prams with me on this test, so pram and shopping bag testing will follow, but there's plenty to share about how this enormous American ute stacks up for families…

How much does the Ram 1500 Rebel cost and what are the options?

Model Grade Price (Before On-road Costs)
Ram 1500 Express Black Edition $109,950
Ram 1500 Rebel $141,950
Ram 1500 Laramie Sport $141,950
Ram 1500 Limited $159,950

The price of the Ram 1500 Rebel starts at $141,950 (excluding rego, stamp duty, etc.), which puts it at the same price as the road-focused Laramie Sport. The Ram 1500 range now starts from $109,950 with the new Express Black Edition, and tops out at $159,950 for the luxury-focused Limited.

2026 Ram 1500 Rebel front three-quarter view

All Ram 1500 models now come with the new twin-turbo 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder ‘Hurricane' engine. The Rebel is the off-road-focused variant, so it gains a one-inch suspension lift with Bilstein off-road dampers, 32-inch Falken Wildpeak all-terrain tyres, underbody skid plates, an electronic locking rear differential, and black powder-coated steel bumpers front and rear. It also gets the full-size rear tub without the RamBox storage system found on the Laramie Sport and Limited.

It's worth mentioning that this is a very different proposition to mid-size dual-cab utes like the Ford Ranger or Toyota HiLux. The Ram 1500 is a full-size American pick-up that's been converted to right-hand drive in Melbourne. The Rebel is available in three colours: Bright White, Flame Red, and Hydro Blue. The test car here is in the Flame Red.

How big is the tray of the Ram 1500 Rebel?

The tailgate of the Ram 1500 opens and closes automatically with the touch of a button, which is great when your hands are full of kids' gear. One thing to be aware of is that the tailgate sits at child head height when it's open, so keep little ones clear while it's opening and closing.

The Rebel has the full-size rear ute tub (without the clever RamBox side storage bins you get on the Laramie Sport and Limited). Ram said this is so the tray has more room to fit larger items like camping gear or a dirt bike with the tailgate closed.

2026 Ram 1500 Rebel tray loaded with a dirt bike viewed from the rear

The tray comes with a grippy spray-in bed liner, movable tie downs in the sides, tie downs in the floor, and cargo tie-down slider rails. One disappointment is there are no power sockets or lights in the tray for charging a portable fridge or illuminating your gear when camping. Given the Rebel's off-road image and steep price and tray lighting, a power socket would have been a welcome addition!

I didn't have my prams and shopping bags with me on this test, so pram fit and shopping bag testing will follow when I drive this with my family but it's safe to say you'll fit any size pram or dog in the tray of the RAM 1500! For context, the other full-size American utes on BabyDrive hold impressive amounts: the Chevrolet Silverado fits 37 shopping bags and the Toyota Tundra and Ford F-150 fit 35.

The boot space and its functionality are really important. I like to have a big boot space and little side wells or areas I can divide things into. So something I don't want to move around while I'm driving such as my daughter's lunch bag or her wet swimming gear can be sectioned off in a little well where it's not going to spill or get squashed by the rest of the things in the boot.

Hooks for securing shopping bags to are also favourites of mine, I like being able to secure the bag containing more fragile things like eggs so they don't move around on the journey.

I measure the boot space in freezer shopping bags, prams and dogs. Not because I think all there is to a mum's life is food shopping, prams and dogs. (Although it can feel like it sometimes!!) But because these are visually measurable items we can all associate with. For me, the car company boot measurement of litres is not an amount I can easily visualise and 400L in one car may differ in usability to that in another due to the configuration or shape of the space.

How good is the storage in the Ram 1500 Rebel for families?

Storage inside the cabin of the Ram 1500 Rebel is excellent for families. The sheer size of this vehicle means there's loads of space to stash everyone's bits and pieces.

In the back, there are air vents in the back of the central console box so you can keep rear passengers at the right temperature while you're driving. Below those, there are charging sockets for plugging in phones and devices, which is fantastic news for keeping everyone's screens topped up on long drives.

There's a fold-down armrest in the central rear seat backrest with cup holders, and behind the central console box are two more cup holders for rear passengers, which is a great feature.

The Ram 1500 also has storage under the rear seats, including underfloor covered storage pockets. These are great for hiding valuables or stashing the kids' wet swimming gear out of the way.

In the front, the storage is generous. There's an enormous central console box with a little shelf in the top of it for separating your everyday essentials.

There are two cup holders in the central console that will hold a reusable or disposable coffee cup.

The front passenger seatback folds flat to create a table surface, which is a brilliant feature for families. Over the years I've written a lot of BabyDrive content during the kids' nap times, so flat surfaces like this would be perfect for working on a laptop while parked up.

The glove box is a good size. The door bins are a good size too and they've got bottle or cup holders built into them. There are two wireless phone charging pads in the front console area, and loads of charging sockets dotted throughout the central console and dash, so you'll never run out of places to charge your devices.

There are lit vanity mirrors in both the front visors and a glasses case in the ceiling.

Physical buttons and dials on the dash handle the key controls, so things like climate and drive modes aren't buried in the touchscreen. This is a nice touch for busy parents who need to change settings without taking their eyes off the road for too long.

How many child seats will fit in the Ram 1500 Rebel?

This is where the Ram 1500 Rebel is a standout for families. There are ISOFIX anchorages for all three rear seats, which is fantastic! They're not within plastic guides but they are nice and easy to access and connect to.

2026 Ram 1500 Rebel second row seats with top tether anchorages visible

There are also top-tether anchorages for all three rear seats. They are woven loops with a metal ring on them, positioned behind each of the rear headrests.

You pass the top tether strap through the metal ring behind the relevant headrest and then across to the top tether anchorage next to your child seat. For example, if you're installing in the outer seat, you go through the ring behind it and then across to attach the clip onto the adjacent anchorage point.

This setup makes it not too bad to install child seats and I could get three across the roomy rear bench without any trouble. It's spacious back there, so there's loads of room to work when you're installing and adjusting seats too.

Having ISOFIX and top-tether anchorages for all three rear positions is AMAZING for a ute! Most dual-cab utes sold in Australia, including the Kia Tasman, Toyota HiLux, and Isuzu D-Max, only have anchorages for the two outer positions. See our Which dual cab utes fit 3 child seats article. Even the other full-size American pick-ups, the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado and Ford F-150, have top tether anchors for all three but only ISOFIX for the outer two.

I installed child seats rear-facing as well as forward-facing, and both configurations work with ample legroom. With forward-facing child seats, a 190cm driver (or taller) can fit comfortably in front.

With rear-facing child seats…

… a 186cm driver can comfortably fit in front.

The footwell is completely flat in the back and it's enormous! Passengers big and small can get in and out easily and there's fantastic kick room for everyone. All your lanky teens will fit nicely back here too.

Headroom is excellent. The panoramic sunroof has a proper blind for hot, sunny days and at other times adds an airy feel in the cabin and I know little ones in the back love having a view of the sky, especially when Christmas lights are on at night.

How comfortable is the Ram 1500 Rebel for families?

All members of the family will be kept comfortable in the Ram 1500 Rebel. The cabin is enormous and everyone gets their own personal space, which is something you don't get a lot of when you've got little kids so it's a treat to have it in here!

2026 Ram 1500 Rebel front row interior with dashboard and seats

Passengers in the back are well catered for with air-conditioning vents in the back of the central console box, so you can keep little rear passengers at the right temperature while driving along.

2026 Ram 1500 Rebel rear centre console air vents, USB-C ports and heated seat controls on the back of the front centre console

There aren't any handles above the rear doors, but there are plastic hooks that you could attach a toy to for keeping your little ones entertained while driving. There are lights in the ceiling too, so you can see what you're doing when you're putting kids in and out of their child seats at night.

I have found our daughter does not like travelling in the dark in the car so if it gets dark whilst travelling then I reach back and turn the interior light on for her. So it's really important for me that I can reach the rear ceiling light.

Also if I am traveling home and it is getting near to bed time and I DEFINITELY DON'T want her to fall asleep in the car as even a 5-minute nap in the car means bed time is all over!!!! I lean back and pop the light on so it's not dark and try to keep her awake!! Along with screaming/singing at the top of my voice!!!

It is also useful when there are lights situated above the doors where the handles are usually positioned. These are good for when putting baby into their child seats when visibility is poor, so you do not have to reach across them to a light situated in the ceiling centrally etc.

The Rebel comes with heated front seats and heated outer rear seats as well as a heated steering wheel. The front seats are comfortable and there's electronic adjustment for the driver.

The media system in the Ram 1500 is on a lovely big 14.4-inch portrait touchscreen. It's easy to navigate along the bottom of the screen, and it has both wireless and wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, so you can access your phone, navigation, music and messaging apps while driving.

Through the vehicle settings on the screen, you can change your camera view (handy for lining up to hitch a trailer), and you can go in and customise driver assistance settings to how you like them. The settings are extensive, so you can adjust the sensitivity and behaviour of the various alerts to calm the nerves of sensory-overloaded parents. When you put the Ram into reverse, the camera images are lovely and clear, and you can turn the front and rear parking sensors off on the screen.

There's built-in sat nav as well, plus physical controls on either side of the screen for climate and other functions, making everything nice and easy to access while driving.

The front passenger also gets their own 10.25-inch touchscreen with a privacy film so the driver can't see it. This passenger screen can mirror a smartphone for movies and video clips (perfect for keeping a front-seat passenger entertained), act as a co-pilot for navigation by searching for destinations and transferring routes to the main screen, and access the camera view at any time. This is a fantastic feature for families where the front passenger is often helping with navigation while the driver focuses on the road.

There's also a 12-inch digital driver display behind the steering wheel.

You can lock the doors and windows from the driver's door control panel, which is great for keeping little fingers from pressing buttons they shouldn't.

How safe is the Ram 1500 Rebel for families?

Being the next size up from your regular dual-cab utes, the Ram 1500 doesn't have an ANCAP star rating. Instead ANCAP tests the driver assistance systems where the Ram 1500 has achieved a gold collision avoidance assessment. This is not the same as a full star rating that includes crash testing for adult and child occupant protection, and it means there are no ANCAP child occupant protection scores available for this vehicle.

The Ram 1500 comes with six airbags as standard, including dual frontal, side chest-protecting and side head-protecting (curtain) airbags. Six airbags is fewer than many modern dual-cab utes such as the Kia Tasman that has seven airbags including a centre airbag and the Ford Ranger has eight.

The Ram 1500 range comes with active safety technologies as standard, including autonomous emergency braking (AEB) with forward collision alert, adaptive cruise control (ACC), lane-keeping assistance, blind spot monitoring (BSM), rear cross-traffic alert (RCTA), front and rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera and trailer brake control.

The ADAS settings on the touchscreen are extensive and allow you to customise how the driver assistance features behave, which is good news for families who want to fine-tune alert sensitivity (and sound levels) to suit their needs.

Some of these safety features are also features that drive me crazy as a mum! Like the lane departure and forward collision alert or the parking sensor beeping sound. I want all the safety technology AND to be able to mute the sound when Bub's asleep!

What is the Ram 1500 Rebel like to drive?

Based on my limited time driving the Ram 1500 Rebel at Lang Lang it seems like a comfortable and spacious ute to drive a family in. The cabin is so roomy that everyone has their own personal space, which makes a big difference on longer drives with kids.

2026 Ram 1500 Rebel front row interior with dashboard and seats

The Rebel comes with five driving modes (auto, sport, tow, snow, and off-road) plus a ‘Selec-Speed' function for off-road driving. The beefed-up off-road suspension gives the Rebel a one-inch lift over standard Ram 1500 models, and the 32-inch Falken Wildpeak all-terrain tyres, underbody skid plates, and electronic locking rear differential make it more capable for families who want to go off the beaten track for camping and beach adventures.

Towing capacity is 4,500kg with a 70mm tow ball (or 3,500kg with a 50mm tow ball), so it can comfortably tow your caravan, camper trailer or horse float.

One thing families should be aware of is the sheer size of this vehicle. The Ram 1500 is considerably wider and longer than a mid-size ute like a Ranger or HiLux, which makes parking in tight supermarket and school car parks more daunting. The cameras and parking sensors will help but you'd have to be strategic about where you park it!

One thing I have noticed since being a mum is I hate it when I reach a destination or get home from being out and the kids have either done really well in the car or she is screaming her head off and I have done really well to keep it together for the entire journey (usually the latter!!) and it takes 10 minutes to park the car! It can be really stressful.

The seats are comfortable and all the luxuries inside the cabin (heated seats, heated steering wheel, panoramic sunroof, 19-speaker Harman Kardon sound system) promise smooth daily school runs and enjoyable weekend camping trips.

Additional Information:

The Ram 1500 is imported from the US in left-hand drive and remanufactured to right-hand drive in Melbourne for Ram Trucks Australia. The Rebel's payload capacity is 893kg. The Express Black Edition has a higher 1,014kg payload as it doesn't carry the heavier off-road equipment.

Compare the Ram 1500 Rebel:

If you're looking at the Ram 1500 Rebel as a family ute, the most direct competitors are the other full-size American pick-ups. The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 also fits three child seats across the back (with ISOFIX for two and top tethers for all three), holds 37 shopping bags in its tray, and has a 186cm driver fitting in front of forward-facing child seats.

You can see our full comparison of Which Dual Cab Utes Can Fit 3 Child Seats here and Which are the safest utes for families here.

The Ford F-150 XLT also fits three across (ISOFIX for two, top tethers for all three), holds 35 shopping bags, and a 186cm driver fits in front of forward-facing seats. Neither of those has ISOFIX for the centre position like the Ram does.

The Toyota Tundra also fits three child seats across in the back, with two ISOFix and three top tethers, and 35bags in the tray.

For families considering mid-size dual-cab utes at a lower price, the Kia Tasman X-Pro ($74,990) holds 31 shopping bags in its tray and has a five-star ANCAP safety rating with 85% child occupant protection, but can only fit two child seats in the outer positions.

The Ford Ranger only fits two child seats across (two ISOFIX and two top tethers), holds 30 shopping bags, and has a five-star ANCAP rating with 93% child occupant protection.

2023 Ford Ranger

The Toyota HiLux Rogue holds 29 shopping bags but can only fit two child seats.

The key trade-off is that the mid-size utes cost roughly half the price and have full ANCAP star ratings, but none of them can match the Ram's cabin space, three-position ISOFIX, or towing capability.

BabyDrive Verdict on the 2026 Ram 1500 Rebel

To sum up, the Ram 1500 Rebel has one headline feature that sets it apart from every other ute I've tested: you can fit three child seats across the back with ISOFIX and top-tether anchorages for all three positions. For families who need three child seats in a ute, this is the best option on the market.

2026 Ram 1500 Rebel with three child seats installed in the second row

The cabin is enormous. The flat footwell, generous legroom (a 190cm+ driver fits in front of forward-facing seats, 186cm+ with rear-facing), and heated rear seats make it a comfortable place for kids and adults alike. The front passenger screen, panoramic sunroof, and 19-speaker sound system are luxury touches that make daily family life more enjoyable.

Where it falls down is the lack of a full ANCAP star rating, which means there's no independently verified child occupant protection score, the same as all American pick-ups. The six airbags (with no centre airbag) is also fewer than you'd find in most modern mid-size utes. And at $141,950, it's a significant investment compared to mid-size alternatives.

I'll be testing the Ram 1500 with my family soon for full pram fit and shopping bag testing in the tray, so check back for those results. But based on the child seat and cabin testing alone, the Ram 1500 Rebel makes a strong case as a family ute for those who can afford it and who need that three-across child seat capability.

Key Pros:

  • Fits three child seats across the rear bench
  • ISOFIX and top-tether anchorages for all three rear positions
  • 190cm+ driver fits in front of forward-facing child seats
  • 186cm+ driver fits in front of rear-facing child seats
  • Enormous flat-floored rear cabin
  • Heated front seats and outer rear seats
  • 4,500kg maximum braked towing capacity (70mm tow ball)
  • 19-speaker Harman Kardon sound system

  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Dual wireless phone charging
  • Front passenger seatback folds flat as a table
  • Off-road capability with Bilstein suspension, skid plates and e-locker
  • Under-seat storage in the rear

Key Cons:

  • No full ANCAP star rating (collision avoidance assessment only)
  • Only six airbags (no centre airbag)
  • $141,950 is a significant price tag
  • No power sockets or lighting in the tray
  • Very large vehicle makes parking in tight spaces challenging
  • 893kg payload is lower than many regular dual-cab utes
  • No RamBox tray storage (by design, for a larger cargo area)
  • Only three colour options
