2023 Mitsubishi Triton GSR family car review

The Mitsubishi Triton has always been a favourite dual-cab ute of mine for families due to its spaciousness and relatively easy access to top tether anchorages when installing child seats. This model is at the end of its life and later this year the brand new model will be revealed! Starting with the important part, installing child seats, the 2023 Mitsubishi Triton dual-cab ute has ISOFix in the two outer rear seats and top tether anchorages for just those two outer rear seats as well. The top tether anchorages are behind the rear seatback. The Mitsubishi Triton is one of the few remaining utes with metal top tether anchorages attached to the body of the vehicle, which is something we are pleased to see for families' safety. A lot of new utes have moved to fabric loops for top tether anchorages, situated behind the rear headrests which are not as easy or robust to use. You can read more about this here.

This is one of the easiest utes for families to install child seats in the back, as behind the fold-down armrest in the central seat are two zips that you can undo and put your arm through to reach the top tether anchorages to tighten them.

I could install two Infasecure child seats in the back of the 2023 Mitsubishi Triton dual-cab ute really comfortably, I installed the Infasecure Attain More and Achieve More, and I could fit in the middle seat between them.

Because there is no central top tether anchorage you can only install two child seats, however you can put an Infasecure Versatile Folding Booster in the central seat because its super lightweight design means it doesn't require a top tether anchorage.

Head and legroom is really good in the 2023 Mitsubishi Triton dual-cab ute; a 182cm passenger can fit in front of a rear-facing child seat. I enjoyed using the footwell space in front of the rear-facing Infasecure child seat to transport our compact stroller when it is raining and nipping to do school runs.

Storage throughout the 2023 Mitsubishi Triton dual-cab ute is good; there are two cup holders in the front and back that will hold a reusable or disposable coffee cup.

Door bins in both the front and rear are practical in size and will hold a large refillable water bottle.

In the front, they are larger and will hold an iPad and wallet in them too.

Two map pockets in the back will hold but not conceal an iPad…

…and there is a phone storage well and USB sockets in the back of the central console box.

In the front, the glove box is generous and will hold a wallet and iPad with the manual…

…whereas the central console box is quite small.

There is a phone charging tray in front of the gear lever…

…and a glasses case in the ceiling (yay and I hope the new Triton keeps this feature as so many modern vehicles seem to be losing the ceiling-mounted sunglasses holder).

The 2023 Mitsubishi Triton dual-cab ute has large aircon vents in the ceiling to keep little passengers in the back at the right temperature while you are driving along. The controls are in the central rear ceiling with the lights…

…and you can turn the rear aircon on and off with a button situated in the ceiling with the glasses case in the front.

The tray of the 2023 Mitsubishi Triton dual-cab ute is ample in size and will fit 28 shopping bags from empty. This is comparable to the Jeep Gladiator which holds 27, the GWM Cannon and Toyota HiLux that hold 29 and the 2023 Ford Ranger, Mazda BT-50 and Isuzu D-Max all hold 30 shopping bags.

You can carry as many prams, shopping, bikes and dogs as your family need and it's great for a family camping trip. The tailgate is heavy and it's just at child height so you need to watch they don't walk into it!

The 2023 Mitsubishi Triton GSR dual-cab ute is nice to drive, although the steering is heavy and it still doesn't have a digital speedo which is unusual and shows this model's age. When the new model comes out later this year I am sure it will contain all the modern technology.

Your riding position is high so visibility is very good out of the front. When reversing the camera image is milky and small on the media screen which can make manoeuvring and parking a bit tricky. Again I am sure the new-generation Mitsubishi Triton coming out later this year will have a much better camera quality.

The reversing camera of this high-spec GSR model Triton does have a bird's eye view also which is helpful, I also found more than in other vehicles the media screen is hard to see in the Australian sun.

You can turn the parking sensors off with a button in the central dash.

The media system in the 2023 Mitsubishi Triton GSR has a very small screen and it's quite basic which makes it simple to navigate.

It does have Apple CarPlay which is great for safely accessing my phone's navigation, listening and messaging apps while driving.

There are USB and 12v sockets in the central dash and a great seatbelt removal visual to let you know if anyone removes their seatbelt while driving.

The 2023 Mitsubishi Triton GSR is a very comfortable dual-cab ute for families, with front heated seat controls and plenty of interior head and legroom.

Travelling in the back is comfortable with or without child seats and you can fit two Infasecure child seats in the rear outer seats with the top tether anchorages and ISOFix. A Versatile Folding Booster seat can also fit in the central seat if you need to carry three across (its super lightweight design means it doesn't need a top tether). Visibility is good for rear passengers to see out while driving along and it is an easy ute to drive around town and do school runs.
