I have come to the Adelaide Hills to test drive the brand new 2024 Mitsubishi Triton on-road and off-road at the Eagle View 4WD track. Now I know the previous model dual cab Triton has been a family favourite, so let’s jump straight in and see how this new model is as a BabyDrive.
The new Triton's wheelbase has been made longer, giving the Triton 1770mm more interior length and 1479mm wider for extra shoulder room in the cabin. So when it comes to installing child seats in the new 2024 Mitsubishi Triton, there is more cabin space, making it feel roomier and giving 546mm more knee room.
There are ISOFIX points in the two outer rear seats. They’re not within plastic guides but are nice and easy to connect to.
There are top tether anchorages for the two outer rear seats only, too. The previous model, Triton, had the best top tether anchorages and the easiest installation of child seats of most dual cab utes, which I know families loved! Unfortunately, Mitsubishi has changed this design in this new model and has moved to this woven fabric loop system, also seen in the Toyota HiLux, Isuzu D-Max, Mazda BT-50, and Nissan Navara.
You pass the top tether strap through the woven loop behind the headrest and take it across to connect it to the metal anchor point behind the central headrest. It can be really difficult to install top tether straps correctly with this method and in the new 2024 Mitsubishi Triton, the loops are offset (as shown in the image above), rather than aligned with the centre of the backrest so you may need a professional installer to fit your child seat for you.
After wrestling with the new top tether anchorages, two Infasecure child seats will fit in the back of the new 2024 Mitsubishi Triton with room to spare. The increase in cabin width should allow for a passenger to sit comfortably between the two child seats, which you couldn't say for the rather narrow old Triton!
The legroom is good. We can easily fit a 180cm or taller driver or passenger in front of the Infasecure Momentum More forward facing.
Rear passengers are really well looked after, with large air vents in the rear ceiling that can be angled to direct the airflow onto your little passengers.
There is also fantastic storage in the back of the new 2024 Mitsubishi Triton. On the back of the front passenger seat are multiple built-in storage pockets, which are great for kids' books, toys, snacks, etc.

…the rear door bins are a great size and hold a refillable water bottle, and there’s lots of space for books, iPads, etc, to be stored in them, too.
There are USB, USB-C and 12V sockets in the back of the central console box so rear passengers, big and small, can charge their devices while travelling.
The great storage continues in the front of the new Mitsubishi Triton. With the introduction of our favourite dashboard cup holders in the top-spec GSR model. They can hold small bottles and coffee cups and also have a chocolate milk holder option too!
There are two cup holders in the centre console, too…
…and a wireless phone charging pad.

… and thankfully, it still has a glasses case in the ceiling.
The door bins in the front are equally good for storage. Holding a large refillable water bottle and books and iPads will fit too.
Round in the tray, the floor height has been lowered for easier loading and unloading, and I’m looking forward to testing the tray for families with Thule prams when I have the Triton for a full test with my family.
The new 2024 Mitsubishi Triton comes with eight airbags as standard. Including those to cover the rear-side passengers and a central front airbag that inflates between the two seats in the event of a collision to prevent the passenger's heads from colliding.
When it comes to safety, the 2024 Mitsubishi Triton has been given a whole new safety suite of passive and impassive safety features on all model grades, including forward collision mitigation, lane departure warning and prevention, blind spot warning and lane change assist, driver attention alert, adaptive cruise control, front and rear cross-traffic alert and a larger and stronger frame etc.
The 2024 Mitsubishi Triton is currently going through ANCAP crash testing, and the rating is expected to be announced later in 2024.
The New Triton has a 9” Media Screen and a new modern system that now has wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto, wireless smartphone charging and inbuilt satnav.
There is now a camera button you can use at low speeds when parking and manoeuvring. The camera quality is excellent, and I found this especially useful during the off-road driving we did so you can see the track in front of you, any obstacles and rocks, etc.
When you put it in reverse, the camera image is excellent.
I drove the new 2024 Mitsubishi Triton on-road and off-road.
On roads, the ride is smooth and quiet compared to the previous model. The extra space in the cabin makes for a comfortable and enjoyable ride with some much-needed personal space.
Visibility is good in the new Triton, and only being able to fit two child seats in the back, you have a clear view out of the middle of the rear windscreen.
The new Triton has the smallest turning circle to its competitors, which makes parking and manoeuvring nice and easy, and I also found it useful off-road.
The interior is modern and minimal, with a light and airy feel.
The Mitsubishi Triton has a 3.5-tonne towing capacity, which I cannot wait to put to the test with my family towing our camper trailer on a family adventure!
I have loved driving the 2024 Mitsubishi Triton on and especially off-road today. I can’t wait to give it our full BabyDrive testing with Infasecure child seats and Thule prams, drive it with my family onboard, and take it on our next family adventure!
